EXMIS

|
EXMIS, the Expert Mission Information System, is a system for developing expert database workstations
to assist mission support personnel. Functionally, EXMIS is an "expert database shell" which is used as
the development environment for specific expert database applications. It combines a natural language
interface, a database management system, and an expert system shell in a complete and self-contained
package. Using EXMIS, a specific application workstation can be constructed by loading appropriate
databases and a knowledge base describing the workstation's functions.
Under the EXMIS project, Abacus developed the workstation shell as described above, and subsequently
developed specific application workstations to assist Space Shuttle mission support engineers.
The concept of an expert database system is one that allows the user to express a query in the problem
domain, rather than the solution domain. In traditional database query systems, the user must first know
what data on the database is needed to solve the problem and must express the query in terms of those
data. The EXMIS system allows the user to express the query simply in terms of the problem. The
system "knows" what data are appropriate to the problem, and it can access and present the data in a
manner that answers the query. Furthermore, the use of Natural Language interfaces permits the user to
express queries in free-form conventional English.
